News: Building Permit Approval Period Reduced To 90 Days

Jul 9, 2019

The Economic Action Council (EAC), headed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has decided to shorten the building permit approval period to 90 days from 390 days to expedite the process.

“This proposal will be implemented immediately by removing unnecessary requirements, without involving amendments to existing laws,” said the Ministry of Economic Affairs, which is also the EAC’s secretariat.

The decision came less than a month after the Prime Minister revealed that the government was planning to reduce the number of processes that businesses and investors have to go through to conduct business in Malaysia, beginning with the construction sector, reported The Edge Markets.

During that time, Dr Mahathir just concluded the third meeting of the EAC, of which the ease of doing business was one of its main agenda.

The ministry revealed that the main issue tackled at the latest EAC meeting was the immediate steps that could be taken to drive the tourism industry, which in turn would stimulate domestic economy, increase foreign exchange earnings and create more job opportunities.

Other things discussed during the meeting were efforts aimed at improving tourism products, redesigning of marketing methods, raising the quality of service, strengthening of governance and boosting of domestic tourism.
